Meleng is an old estate in the heart of Assam in northeast India. The river Meleng runs through it, and a WHS gibbon sanctuary sits beside it. Just in case you’re wondering, gibbons are tree-dwelling, and never descend to the tea fields! The estate is also a partner of the Ethical Tea Partnership, which looks to improve sustainability in the tea industry, the lives of tea workers and the environment in which tea is produced – an altogether fantastic organisation.
Second flush is Assam’s most admired flush, and known for being one of the biggest, richest and most astringent of teas. The tea is less about floral aromas and more about biscuit-like flavour and a coppery infusion, which is why it forms the backbone of many a breakfast-style blend.
The Meleng estate is planted with a mix of clonal tea bushes, developed for their superior qualities, and which add character to the teas. In this case, a good proportion of golden buds are also found in the well sorted leaves, adding more panache to the brew, and caramel top notes.
